Civil and Structural Engineering

Bridges and Culverts

A major challenge we face today is the design of structures for serviceability and resilience to natural hazards. Global warming and climate change have had a significant impact on the environmental condition and have forced safety factors to be adjusted to face these changes. Infrastructure is a critical component of the economy which needs to consider these factors, as it allows for the transference of people, workers, raw materials, and finished goods. With road infrastructure being a vital part of the economy, government expenditure is highly sought within this field. Heavy wave-induced loads floods and scouring may damage the bridge supports and can cause great disruptions. As bridges are road infrastructure that have no alternative route, they are the foundation for other infrastructure and can have a great impact on the community and economic sector. Technology today has adapted the way we construct infrastructure, by prolonging the life of the structure and being able to build the structure in various ways through equipment rather than manpower. The construction of bridges has slowly adapted to the rise in technology, with various methods provided to build different bridges.

JHK believes economical and practical designs are essential to our Clients. The main goal of efficient and economic bridge design is to build a specific bridge for the lowest possible cost, with fewer construction materials, whilst providing an elevated level of functionality and safety based on design criteria and legislative requirements.

JHK have participated in projects covering aspects of Project management, inspection and certification, Concept/Detailed design of Aluminium, Steel and Timber frames for bridges, Concept/Detailed design of Prestressed and Reinforced concrete bridges, Concept/Detailed design of approaches and safety railings, Concept/Detailed design of approaches and safety railings, Concept/Detailed design of Reinforced Concrete culverts, Condition assessment of bridges and report on remedial repairs, and Condition assessment of bridge foundation with assistance from geotechnical investigation. In addition to Engineering Design Consultancy services, we also offer an extensive service in planning such as preparation of documentation for Permission to Lodge, Development Applications and Review of Environmental Factors, Contract Administration, Site Investigation and Design Reports and certification.
