Maritime Engineering

Piles

Pile foundations ensure nearshore and offshore structures are safe, reliable, and sturdy. These installations stabilise piers, wharfs, and bridges, prevent boats from drifting, protect bodies of water, create habitats for aquatic life, and are a form of coastal defence against rising water levels and erosion, thus safeguarding the environment.

The development of Maritime Structures often is challenging as they must be designed to be functional with the effects of storms, waves, winds, currents and berthing energy. Pile foundations are essential in Maritime Engineering and allow for the support of structures. They transfer vertical and lateral loads from the structures to the soil or rock below. The pile is dependent on the vertical and lateral bearing capacities of soil, and the settlement / movement characteristics of the soil. JHK have been a major party of many Pile designs for Maritime Projects, having participated in projects covering aspects of Project management, inspection and certification, conceptual design, investigation and reporting, Contract Administration & Supervision, Structural Design, documentation and supervision of Concrete, Timber and Steel piles, Structural assessment of existing structures and report of condition of piles, and improvement design and mitigation strategies. In addition to Engineering Design Consultancy services, we also offer an extensive service in planning such as preparation of documentation for Permission to Lodge, Development Applications and Review of Environmental Factors, Contract Administration, Site Investigation and Design Reports and certification.

2. Piles will be analysed as an integral part of the main structure using Finite Element modelling to determine the actual lateral and vertical loads transferred to piles.
3. Review of all available geotechnical reports
4. Preliminary discussion with Geotechnical Engineers for foundation depths.
5. Detailed design of foundation based on AS 2159.
6. Design Report / Certificate
1. Preparation of Risk Assessment/ Safety in Design analysis and reports.
1. Piling Layout and set out details based on Coordinates.
2. Engineering Details of piles including depths / penetration into soil.
